What Is a Red Tag or Warning Tag?
In Ontario, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requires licensed technicians to tag gas-fired equipment when safety issues are discovered during inspections, service calls, or installations. There are two types of tags, each with different implications for homeowners.
Important Safety Notice
Never attempt to remove a red tag yourself or reconnect gas to a tagged appliance. This is illegal under Ontario law and poses serious risks including carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fire, and explosion. Only a TSSA-licensed technician can clear a red tag.
Type A: Red Tag
Immediate Danger
A Type A red tag is issued when a TSSA-licensed technician identifies an immediate safety hazard with your gas equipment. The appliance is shut off immediately and the gas supply is disconnected on the spot. It is illegal to operate the equipment until the issue has been fully resolved and cleared by a licensed professional.
- Gas supply shut off immediately
- Equipment cannot be operated until cleared
- Requires licensed repair and re-inspection
Type B: Yellow Tag
Non-Immediate Concern
A Type B yellow tag indicates a safety concern that is not immediately life-threatening but must be corrected within a specific timeframe. The equipment may continue to operate temporarily while you arrange for repairs. Failure to address the issue before the deadline can result in a Type A upgrade and immediate shutdown.
- Equipment can continue operating temporarily
- Must be fixed within a specified timeframe
- Can escalate to Type A if not addressed in time
What Red Tags and Warning Tags Look Like
If a technician has inspected your furnace, water heater, or other gas equipment and left one of these tags behind, here is what you are looking at and what it means for you.
The TSSA Warning Tag
This is the tag most homeowners find attached to their furnace, boiler, or water heater after a technician visit. It is bright orange for a reason: it demands your attention. At the top, you will see two checkboxes. If the "Immediate Hazard" box is checked, your gas has already been shut off and the appliance cannot be used. If "Non-immediate Hazard" is checked, you have a limited window to get repairs done before the gas gets disconnected.
Found one of these on your equipment? Do not panic, but do not ignore it either. Call us and we will walk you through exactly what needs to happen next. Most red tag issues can be resolved within 1 to 3 days.
The A Tag and B Tag Forms
These are the official TSSA notification forms that a gas technician fills out and submits. The A Tag (top, with the red bar) means your appliance or piping is unsafe and has been disconnected and capped. The gas is off at the meter or at the appliance. The B Tag (bottom) means your equipment is safe to use right now, but corrections are required. You typically have 35 days before the gas supply will be shut off if repairs are not completed.
Received one of these forms? Whether it is an A Tag or B Tag, our TSSA-licensed team can assess the situation, complete the repairs, and get your equipment cleared. The sooner you call, the sooner your home is back to normal.
Why Equipment Gets Red Tagged
These are the most frequent issues our technicians encounter when responding to red tag calls across the GTA.
Cracked Heat Exchanger
A cracked or corroded heat exchanger allows combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, to mix with your home's air supply. This is one of the most common reasons for a Type A red tag.
Carbon Monoxide Leak
Elevated carbon monoxide readings near your gas equipment are an immediate red tag situation. CO is odourless and colourless, making it extremely dangerous without proper detection.
Improper Venting
Blocked, disconnected, or incorrectly installed flue pipes can allow combustion byproducts to build up inside your home or building instead of being safely exhausted outdoors.
Gas Leak
Detected gas leaks at connections, valves, or piping require immediate shutdown. Even a small leak can accumulate and create fire or explosion hazards in enclosed spaces.
Damaged Gas Valve
A faulty, corroded, or malfunctioning gas valve can fail to regulate gas flow properly, creating a risk of uncontrolled gas release or incomplete combustion.
Code Violations
Installations that do not meet current Ontario building and gas codes, including improper clearances, missing permits, or work performed by unlicensed individuals.

- Only a TSSA-licensed technician can legally clear a tag after repairs are completed.
- Tampering with a tag or reconnecting gas yourself is a violation of Ontario regulation and extremely dangerous.
